Galveston is home to many excellent academic institutions. In fact, the island boasts campuses of two of the largest university systems in Texas: The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and Texas A & M University at Galveston (TAMUG). Both schools are renown in their respective fields of study -- medicine and marine science.
Galvestonarea residents are also served by several community colleges: Galveston College (on the island) and College of the Mainland and Alvin Community College (both on the mainland). It offers a unique blend of marine and maritime programs, including majors in science, business, engineering, and transportation. The Texas Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets at TAMUG encompasses license option cadets, NROTC cadets and Spirit Unit cadets.
